PET TRANSPORT

You have to understand that your rescued pet cannot travel with you back home! After its rabies vaccination, it has to wait 22 whole days. During the summer, many tourists travel with charter or so-called low cost flights which do not accept pets anyway. Your pet has to stay at least 22 days in a boarding kennel and you have to arrange its transport back home.

There are 3 ways to bring your pet back home:

1st METHOD

You come back to Greece after at least 22 days and bring it back home on a regular flight (not for UK!): Aegean Airlines, Lufthansa, ... You can choose to come with a cheap charter and fly back on a regular flight to reduce the costs.
Most of the air companies accept pets, but not all and prices vary. Check first! Pets travel either in the cabin (PETC) or in the cargo area (AVIH). An example of prices with Aegean Airlines (rates apply per direction and weight is crate included):

Weight
Domestic flight
International
less 8kg (cabin)
20€ / £15
40€ / £30
up to 25kg
40€ / £30
80€ / £65
over 25kg
80€ / £65
150€ / £120
Not all planes of a same company accept pets! For example, Aegean Airlines:
- AIRBUS 320/321: 4 pets in aircraft cabin (petc), 1 in business class and 3 in economy class & 8 in cargo compartment (avih)
- AIRBUS 319:  4 pets in aircraft cabin (petc),1 in business class and 3 in economy class, no pet in cargo compartment (avih).
- BOMBARDIER DE HAVILLAND DASH 8 Q400: 2 pets in aircraft cabin (petc), no pets in cargo compartment (avih).
- BOMBARDIER DE HAVILLAND DASH 8 100: 2 pets in aircraft cabin (petc), no pets in cargo compartment (avih).

Rules vary! Example for Aegean Airlines:
  • The maximum number of Domesticated Animals that an owner can transport cannot be more than 5 animals. As a rule, each container should have only one animal.
  • However, they accept up to 2 dogs or cats in one container, provided that the animals are up to 14kg each and provided that they are familiar with each other.
  • Moreover, they accept up to 3 dogs or cats in one container, provided that the animals are up to 6 months old each and they are from the same litter.
  • The total weight of the AVIH (including the container!) is not restricted to a certain limit, however as a recommendation, the AVIH should not exceed 50kg.

2nd METHOD

Ask a Pet Travel Agency to arrange for your pet's transport, be it to an European country, to the UK (only solution) or elsewhere. With Aegean Airlines , from Greece to London Heathrow, contact Cargo Head Office in Athens: Tel: +30 210 3543 700 / 30 210 3543 094-6 Fax: +30 210 3543 198 Email: cargosupervisor@aegeanair.com. Prices vary, according to weight (pet + crate) and size of the crate, between 540€ and 1.500€
For UK, AIA Pets is the exclusives travel agent for Thomson's Airways (http://www.aiapets.com/) and TFA Logistics of Monarch Airlines, but they work with all airlines exporting and importing pets throughout the world (http://www.tfalogistics.com/pet_travel.html). Our visitors have a very good experience with both of them. TFA has a 24 hours help line which can be useful sometimes. Contact them for a quote.

3d METHOD

You can ask family or a friend living in your home country to bring the dog to you when traveling back home, be it by air (not for UK!), by boat or by car. You will have to write him/her a detailed description of the dog, including its microchip number and specifying you allow him/her to travel with the dog back home. It's a letter of attorney. This works well if the dog travels within 5 days of your leave.  This eventuality is very rare.
You can contact a dog rescue association who will help you to bring your pet back home for a reasonable price. They will find someone acting as an escort-person.
To avoid unnecessary troubles, the best solution is to have the dog's passport on the escort-person's name.
Call us for all supplementary details and way-of-doing. Every situation is different.

NORWAY

Since Norway isn't a member of the European Union, special rules apply. Read this website: http://www.pettravel.com/immigration/Norway.cfm

International is meant inside the EU. For outside the EU, you should read the appropriate website of the destination country.
